Make Dobby’s Door with your Elf Door Kit
- Paint your elf door.
I used a dry brush stroke by getting a little white paint on the end of my dry paintbrush. Brush a little on a paper to get any blobs worked in then gently apply the paint to the door using long strokes. Don’t over brush unless you want a fully coated door instead of a rustic look.
- Paint the base a solid color – I used light tan for this.
- Cover the back portion of your shelf using scrapbook paper (or paint it to match the color of the base).
Trim corners to help it fold over then put a very light coat of glue on the front of the board and stick the paper down. Fold the edges of the paper around and glue to back of board.
- Attach base to the back portion of the shelf using screws provided.
- Create a banner for Dobby’s door using this free printable.
Cut out and glue to bakers’ twine. When dry, drape over the back of the shelf and secure with glue.
- Hang the sock on Dobby’s door by cutting two pieces of bakers’ twine and attaching them around the door to form a swag, then attach the sock using a miniature clothespin.
- Make little pompoms.
Wrap bakers’ twine around two tines of a large fork about 1/3 of the way down, then wrap string around the middle of the string on the fork, tie, and cut the ends of the loops to form pompom.
Leave one string long and tie together to form decoration. Tie the two tiny keys from the doorknobs together and hang with the pompoms.
- Make a mini-rug for the cauldron to sit on.
Cut three pieces of bakers’ twine about 28″-30″ long. Tie together on one end. Braid the yarn loosely and secure with another knot. *tip: It’s easier to brad if you stick the first knot between the tines of a fork and place something on the fork to keep it in place. Twist the fork as you go.
Twist the braid around itself and secure on the back with needle and thread or hot glue.
Continue around until you reach the end of the braid. Tuck the knot underneath and stitch or glue in place.
- Glue on the doorknob, place the cauldron, stepladder, owl (gotta have Hedwig!), wand, and other details where you’d like them to be.
Isn’t Hedwig awesome!?! I love this little owl! - Find the perfect spot to enjoy Dobby’s Door!
I tried it on the wall and on the floor and loved them both!
Notes: I LOVE that this kit is so well prepared. The holes are pre-drilled and countersunk and has a really nice surface. I also love the precision cuts on the door and ladder. I didn’t have to correct anything- they were well built and darling. The ladder is easy to adjust but you’ll want to be sure to secure it at the hinge – it’s loosely built so it won’t break when you move it around.
Stay tuned for door number 2 – coming soon!
